Arizona regents reject proposal for discount for immigrants

TUCSON, Ariz. -- The Arizona Board of Regents rejected a proposal to give a university tuition discount to some immigrant students in the United States illegally.

The board on Thursday rejected Regent Dennis DeConcini's proposal, with other regents saying the proposal wouldn't survive a legal challenge.

Students not in the country legally have to pay out-of-state tuition rates, which are much higher than in-state rates.

Arizona law prohibits providing in-state tuition rates or state-funded financial aid to students not legally in the country.

DeConcini's proposal would have created a new rate of 110 percent of in-state tuition for so-called "dreamers" in the federal program for deferred action from deportation.

Maricopa County's community college district has been sued by Attorney General Tom Horne over its giving in-state status to "dreamers."
