Green Party could lose recognition in Arizona

PHOENIX — The Green Party may no longer be recognized in Arizona after dropping below the number of registered voters required by state law.
For a party to be recognized in Arizona, it must have at least 5 percent of the registered voters in a presidential or gubernatorial election. The Green Party fell short of the needed 21,499 registered voters to be recognized.
“Political parties play an important role in our system of elections,” Arizona Secretary of State Ken Bennett said in an email. “While the Green Party has fallen off the list of Arizona’s recognized parties, we’re told it have already begun circulating petitions seeking recognition for 2014. We look forward to its return.”
To be recognized, the Green Party will have to submit 23,041 signatures to the state by Feb. 27, 2014.
