Phoenix company faces $150K penalty for dust violations

PHOENIX -- Federal environmental regulators said a Phoenix-area sand and gravel operation will pay a civil penalty of $150,000 for dust violations.

The Environmental Protection Agency said its consent decree with Fisher Sand and Gravel also requires the company to take steps to minimize the generation of dust from its south Phoenix plant.

The EPA said the violations occurred at Fisher's locations in Buckeye, Sun City and Phoenix.

Those violations included failing to spray water during earthmoving operations and failing to clean up dirt tracked more than 50 feet beyond a site.

Steps that the company must take include installing water spray bars to control dust at its Phoenix location and submitting detailed compliance reports.

The EPA said dust is a public health concern because particulate matter affects the respiratory system.
