PHOENIX -- State environment regulators have issued a high pollution advisory and ban on wood-burning fires for Friday in metropolitan Phoenix.

The Arizona Department of Environmental Quality said the advisory was issued in anticipation of high winds that will stir up a large amount of dust.

State officials recommended that children and adults with respiratory problems avoid outdoor activities on Friday and suggested that the general public limit outdoor activity throughout the day.

Other recommended steps included cutting down on automobile trips and avoiding use of drive-thru lines and leaf blowers.

Officials said the burn restrictions applied to fireplaces, fire pits and open outdoor burning.
