Search complete of Phoenix-area explosion site

PHOENIX -- A bomb squad has finished an extensive search of the site where an explosion north of Phoenix seriously injured a man a week ago.

The search, which ended Wednesday, yielded three old grenades.

Steven Scott Lane, 49, lost part of his left foot and suffered damage to his right leg after he stepped on something buried on the property in New River.

A former munitions worker had previously owned the property, but that man, Charles Byers, who now lives in the San Diego area, told a Southern California television station that whatever exploded did not belong to him.

The Maricopa County Sheriff's Office said Byers had been investigated in 1997 by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobabcco and Firearms.

While the search for more explosives is done, authorities are still investigating the explosion.
