WITTMANN, Ariz. -- A Maricopa County Sheriff's deputy shot and wounded a man after the man tried to hit the deputy with his car.

Sheriff's office spokesman Officer Christopher Hegstrom tells KNXV television station the deputy stopped a vehicle early Saturday near 213th Avenue and Patton Road.

When the deputy asked the driver to step out of his vehicle, Hegstrom says the driver allegedly put the vehicle in reverse and attempted to hit the deputy.

The deputy fired his weapon, hitting the man. The suspect was taken to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Hegstrom says the man, whose name was not immediately released, will be booked into the 4th Avenue Jail upon his release from the hospital.
