SIERRA VISTA, Ariz. -- An Army veteran who lives in southern Arizona has finally received a military decoration he was awarded during the Vietnam War.

The Sierra Vista Herald reported that retired Staff Sgt. Alejandro Gonzales, 80, received his Army Commendation Medal with Valor during a ceremony at Fort Huachuca this week. An oversight delayed his receiving the medal.

Gonzales was awarded the medal for his actions when a barracks was hit by rockets during an attack on a base in 1967. He went into the burning building and led fellow soldiers through the flames to safety.
