PAGE, Ariz. -- A five-day flood of water from Glen Canyon Dam that's meant to build up beaches and sandbars along the Colorado River starts Monday.

Most of the sediment that once flowed into the Grand Canyon now is trapped upstream of Glen Canyon Dam.

Periodic flooding mimics the conditions of the dam before it was built in the 1960s, giving boaters a place to camp and helping out endangered fish that spawn in pockets of warmer water.

The U.S. Bureau of Reclamation says the bypass tubes at Glen Canyon Dam near the Arizona-Utah border will be opened Monday afternoon. Releases will return to normal Nov. 16.

The flood will be the second since the Interior Department declared them routine in a 10-year protocol.
