Northern Arizona jail has sweat lodge for inmates
PHOENIX -- The Coconino County Jail in northern Arizona now has a sweat lodge.
With more than half of the inmates being of American Indian descent, jail officials said many inmates requested a sweat lodge for religious ceremonies.
A Phoenix TV station reported that the structure cost about $2,000. The majority of that money came from profit made by the commissary and inmate telephone calls.
James Bret is the detention-services coordinator in charge of religious, educational and recovery programs at the jail. He said a trained medicine man will lead each sweat lodge ceremony.
Security at the sweat lodge will be tight with extra guards and the ceremony will be under supervision of an armed officer.
