PHOENIX -- Police monitored a man and his 12-year-old son who were armed while picking up a passenger at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport.

The man told police he was carrying a weapon out of fear for his safety after Friday's shooting at Los Angeles International Airport.

A Phoenix police officer on patrol Sunday afternoon was told a man had a rifle slung over his shoulder in a public area of Terminal 3 and the man's son had a handgun holstered to his hip.

Officers stayed with the two until they left the airport's property. The names of the man and his son weren't released.

Police spokesman Sgt. Trent Crump says Arizona law governs the publicly accessible areas of the airport and the actions of the man and his son weren't prohibited.
