Ex-con indicted in 1982 death of woman in Phoenix

PHOENIX -- Authorities say DNA evidence has led to the indictment of an ex-convict in the 1982 killing of a woman in Phoenix.

Maricopa County prosecutors announced Thursday that 56-year-old Teodoro Barron Corella Jr. is charged with one count of first-degree murder for allegedly strangling Karen Casanova.

Phoenix police say the body of the 25-year-old Casanova was found in a vacant field on Jan. 31, 1982.

Evidence collected during an autopsy didn't point to a possible suspect and police say the case went cold.

Casanova's fingernail clippings were submitted for DNA testing in 2011 and authorities say a match was eventually found with a sample belonging to Corella.

Police say Corella was arrested in July for failing to register as a sex offender and has served prison time in Arizona and California.
