PHOENIX -- Authorities said a north Phoenix couple escaped without injuries when their house's garage caught fire Monday morning.

The Fire Department said Steve Garrison woke up around 3 a.m. when he heard a popping noise from the garage area of the home near Union Hills Drive and Seventh Street.

According to a department spokesman, Garrison saw a glow from under a door and smoke coming from the door jamb.

He didn't open the door, and fire officials said that kept the fire from spreading to the rest of the house.

Garrison and his wife escaped through the back of the house.

Cause of the fire is under investigation.
