PEORIA, Ariz. -- A man who broke into a Peoria home is recovering after being shot in the leg with his own weapon.

The Arizona Republic reports that the 23-year-old intruder was hospitalized Thursday morning with non-life-threatening injuries.

Authorities say he and a 19-year-old male accomplice broke into the home around 1 a.m.

Police say a couple, who later said they knew the suspects, and a 5-year-old child were sleeping.

The men then allegedly assaulted the couple.

Police say the male occupant of the house was able to wrestle the 23-year-old's gun away and shot him.

Both men fled by car to a house in Phoenix. Police arrived after someone reported the gunshot wound and the 19-year-old, along with a 26-year-old woman, were arrested.

The couple was treated for minor injuries.
