Phoenix City Council rejects pension spiking proposal

PHOENIX — After a sometimes-volatile meeting lasting over four hours, the Phoenix City Council has voted 5-4 to reject a proposal that would have ended pension spiking among city employees.

The practice allows workers to include things like unused sick time to bump up their retirement pensions. The deal would have taken affect by July of next year.

The vote was taken after the acting city manager told the council that it is unclear how much money doing away with pension spiking would save the city.

The meeting was attended by hundreds of city employees, most of whom were against the plan.
