TUCSON, Ariz. -- A Tucson woman convicted in the 2005 death of her foster child will serve six months in prison.
The Arizona Daily Star reported Tuesday that Penny West was also sentenced to four years' probation.
Pima County Superior Court Judge Javier Chon-Lopez said at Monday's sentencing that the jail term was appropriate since West hadn't shown any remorse in 16-month-old Emily Mays' death.
Prosecutors say the girl died of a blunt-force head injury while in West's care.
They say doctors who treated her found extensive brain damage like one would sustain in a fall.
West's conviction was initially set aside due to insubstantial evidence but the Arizona Court of Appeals reinstated it in 2010.
Her attorney plans to appeal the sentence.
