FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. -- About 20 workers have Phantom Ranch at the bottom of the Grand Canyon all to themselves because of the partial government shutdown.

The National Park Service and concession employees would normally be busy with work related to visiting hikers and mule-riding tourists.

Worker Michael McNulty told the Arizona Daily Sun by phone that it feels like being on a relaxing vacation.

McNulty said the solitude is nice but that things likely will get boring soon enough without visitors.

He said the concessionaire, Xanterra, has kept the workers supplied.

McNulty added it's been a challenge to try to eat all the soon-to-expire food left in the refrigerators.
