PHOENIX -- A Mesa teenager accused of trying to conceal her childbirth by throwing the newborn out a window has been arrested for attempted homicide.
Maricopa County Sheriff's deputies say the 16-year-old girl also taken into custody Tuesday night on suspicion of child abuse. Her name is being withheld because she's a juvenile.
Authorities suspect the teen gave birth to a child in the bathroom of her family's east Mesa home on Sunday.
Paramedics responded to the home after her family reported that she was bleeding heavily.
Deputies say it appears the baby fell about 5 feet after being thrown out the bathroom window and hit her head on a brick.
Authorities say the child is expected to survive and remains in the custody of state Child Protective Services.
