PHOENIX -- A Mesa teenager accused of trying to conceal her childbirth by throwing the newborn out a window has been arrested for attempted homicide.

Maricopa County Sheriff's deputies said the 16-year-old was taken into custody Tuesday night. Her name is being withheld because she's a juvenile.

Authorities suspected the teen gave birth in the bathroom of her family's east Mesa home on Sunday.

Paramedics responded to the home after her family reported that she was bleeding heavily.

Deputies said it appeared the baby fell about 5 feet after being thrown and hit her head on a brick.

Authorities said the infant is expected to survive and remained in the custody of state Child Protective Services.
