PHOENIX -- A 15-year-old boy has pleaded not guilty in the killing of a Maricopa County detention officer who authorities think was targeted at random when he was shot in his driveway.
A Superior Court spokeswoman said the youth entered the plea Wednesday in the shooting of the 27-year-old officer, Jorge Vargas.
The 15-year-old is charged with first degree murder, aggravated assault and drive-by-shooting.
Vargas was shot Aug. 8 at 4 a.m. while working on his car. He was wearing his Maricopa County Sheriff's Office employee uniform.
The Associated Press is not identifying the teenager by name because of his age.
