PHOENIX -- The director of the Arizona Department of Revenue has died at age 65.

State officials say John Greene died Tuesday night at his Phoenix-area home. Department spokesman Sean Laux didn't know the cause but said Greene had been at work Tuesday.

Greene served in the Arizona Senate from 1991-96 and was its president for two terms.

Gov. Jan Brewer named him as director in 2011.

As an attorney and tax expert, Greene also worked for the Dial Corp., Greyhound, New York Life Insurance Co. and Manhattan Life Insurance Co.

Brewer called Greene ``a public servant in every sense of the word'' who made a ``noble contribution to both government and the private sector.''

Greene is survived by his wife Janice and two adult sons. Funeral arrangements are pending.
