PHOENIX -- Phoenix police said an embrace turned deadly when a woman was fatally shot as her boyfriend removed a gun from his waistband.

Police said the 18-year-old man was hugging his 24-year-old girlfriend on Tuesday when he went to remove the gun because it was uncomfortable for her while they were hugging.

The gun discharged, fatally wounding the woman.

Sgt. Tommy Thompson said the shooting apparently was accidental but the case will go to the Maricopa County Attorney's Office for review.

Identities weren't released.
