PHOENIX -- A firefighter was injured while helping rescue two women who had been hiking on a northwest Phoenix mountain.

A Phoenix Fire Department said a Glendale firefighter participating in the rescue suffered a broken leg during the rescue Sunday at Thunderbird Park.

The two women had been hiking for an extended period of time and reported being unable to walk down the mountain without assistance.

They declined further treatment or transport to a hospital after they were assisted down the mountain.

The firefighter was reported in stable condition.
