PETA: Turn all Arizona prisons to vegetarian diets

PHOENIX — The People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) sent a letter Tuesday that urged the Arizona Department of Corrections to switch to vegetarian meal plans.
PETA claimed the new diet will benefit both prisoners and taxpayers.
“It doesn’t make sense to feed convicts some of the most expensive food on the market when they can get all the nutrition that they need from healthy, delicious vegetarian options,” said PETA Associate Director Lindsay Rajt in a press release. “And this decision gives overburdened taxpayers a break at the same time.”
As an incentive, PETA has offered to pay for a professional chef to consult with the Arizona DOC to come up with vegetarian meal plans.
Last week, Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio decided to drop meat from his inmate’s diets.
