PHOENIX -- Two men have pleaded not guilty in connection with the beating of an Arizona State University student in Tempe while the third suspect failed to show up at the arraignment.

The student suffered a broken jaw and facial fractures in the Sept. 2 beating in an elevator at an off-campus apartment complex.

Maricopa County prosecutors say 19-year-old Kiernan Daniel Bates on Monday pleaded not guilty to aggravated assault and unlawful imprisonment and 19-year-old Harsimrandeep Singh Bhatti pleaded not guilty to unlawful imprisonment.

But 21-year-old Joshua Drew James was a no-show in court.

Authorities say the victim was an uninvited guest at Bates' apartment and the three men were trying to get him to leave.

James and Bhatti are accused of forcing the victim against his will inside an elevator.
