PAYSON, Ariz. -- Authorities have identified a man who shot and wounded an Arizona Department of Public Safety officer near Payson as a Tempe resident.

Officer Seth Meeske, 39, was shot Saturday night during a traffic stop on State Route 87. He was shot three times -- once in the arm, once in the leg and once in the bulletproof vest on his back -- but drove himself to a hospital and is expected to recover.

Meeske radioed dispatchers about the shooting, and officers from several law enforcement agencies chased 22-year-old Cody Archuleta about 40 miles before he drove into a field.

DPS Officer Carrick Cook said officers then exchanged gunfire with him before he was found dead of a gunshot wound to the head.
