PHOENIX -- The Maricopa County Sheriff's Office still opposes a federal court's proposal that deputies announce traffic stops to radio dispatchers before making contact with the driver.

American Civil Liberties Union lawyers representing the plaintiffs in the racial profiling case against Sheriff Joe Arpaio's office say the court's suggestion is consistent with previous consent decrees for law enforcement protocol in New Jersey and Connecticut.

Arpaio's attorneys insist the traffic stop call-in proposal could put a deputy's safety at risk.

Wednesday was the deadline to file additional briefs in the case. U.S. District Judge Murray Snow says he will issue a final order soon.

A small group of Latinos sued MCSO for violating their constitutional rights.

In May, Snow found that Arpaio's office singled out Latinos and deputies unreasonably prolonged detentions.
