Arizona has some of nation's highest rates of poverty

PHOENIX -- New figures from the Census Bureau showed Arizona has some of the highest rates of poverty in the country.

Nineteen percent of the state's residents were living in poverty in 2012.

That was the fifth-highest rate behind Mississippi, Louisiana, New Mexico and Arkansas.

More than 1 in 7 Americans were living in poverty, not statistically different from the 46.2 million of 2011 and the sixth straight year the rate had failed to improve, the Census Bureau reported Tuesday.

Mississippi has the highest rates of poverty while New Hampshire has the lowest.
