TUCSON, Ariz. -- A Pima County Sheriff's Department drug dog has been euthanized after suffering a bizarre injury.

Kilo, a Belgian Malinois, was put down this week following a paralyzing spinal cord injury while chasing a toy in the backyard of his handler.

Deputy Jesus Banuelos said the dog was diagnosed with trauma to his spinal cord from a broken piece of spinal disk.

Banuelos said veterinarians treated Kilo, but were unable to restore movements to his legs.

Officials said Deputy Gerald Ahern and Kilo have conducted 263 narcotics searches since February 2011.

The deputy and his dog were described by Banuelos as "one of the most productive narcotics teams in the history of the Pima County Sheriff's Department Canine Unit."
