PHOENIX -- A Phoenix woman is in custody after two young girls she was babysitting were found to have severe bruises.

Phoenix police said 36-year-old Shan Marie McDonald is being held on two felony counts of child abuse and one count of aggravated assault.

Court documents showed a mother left her 1-year-old and 5-year-old daughters with McDonald on Aug. 2.

When the woman came to pick up her children, she said the baby girl was lying on the couch alone and unable to open her eyes.

The girl was taken to a hospital with bruises on her neck, shoulders, face and thighs plus a cut and swollen lip.

Police said McDonald admitted to choking a 6-year-old girl in her care because she was angry, but didn't know what happened to the 1-year-old.
