PHOENIX -- The Maricopa County Sheriff's Office still opposes a federal court's proposal that deputies announce traffic stops to radio dispatchers before making contact with the driver.

Lawyers submitted a brief Wednesday in the racial profiling case against Sheriff Joe Arpaio's office.

A small group of Latinos sued the agency for violating their constitutional rights.

In May, U.S. District Judge Murray Snow found that Arpaio's office singled out Latinos and deputies unreasonably prolonged detentions.

Both sides remain at odds over key remedies to ensure MCSO adheres to constitutional requirements.

Arpaio's attorneys say the traffic stop call-in proposal could put a deputy's safety at risk.

Snow has given lawyers on both sides until Sept. 18 to file additional briefs in the case and says he will issue a final order soon after that.
