Phoenix police chief wants photo enforcement contract renewed

PHOENIX — Phoenix’s top cop wants red-light cameras to stay.
Four years ago, Phoenix installed red-light cameras at 12 fixed intersections. According to a City Council report from Police Chief Daniel Garcia, crashes have decreased nearly 50 percent and injuries and deaths are down 60 percent in those target intersections.
Phoenix also uses photo radar vans in eight school zones. According to Garcia’s report, photo enforcement has generated $8.5 million for the city and $1.4 million for Redflex, the company that manages the program.
The current contract runs out next June, and Garcia wants council members to solicit bids for another contract.
