Burros, wild horses up for adoption in Mohave County

About 20 wild horses and burros will be available for adoption this week at the Mohave County Fairgrounds in Kingman.

The Bureau of Land Management manages about 200 wild horses and 1,600 burros that roam public lands.

Because they have no natural predators, the BLM says their herd sizes can double nearly every four years. After the mining boom in the late 1800s and early 1900s, burros were turned loose, abandoned or wandered off. Since 1973, the BLM says it has placed more than 200,000 animals into adoptive homes.

Adoptions start Thursday at 12 p.m. MST on a first-come, first-select basis for approved adopters. The fee is $125.
