PHOENIX -- Some Valley parents received a free bus ride this weekend -- to jail.

The Maricopa County Sheriff's Office conducted its annual "Deadbeat Doomsday for Delinquent Moms and Dads" operation on Saturday. MCSO deputies and volunteers served warrants on parents who have failed to pay their court-ordered child support.

Sheriff Joe Arpaio said when parents fail to pay, it is the children who suffer.

"When you have deadbeat parents not paying child support, sometimes the kids are not supervised properly and they turn to drugs and gangs," said Arpaio. "So this is a bigger picture than not just abiding by the courts."

Altogether, Saturday's operation resulted in 37 arrests, 49 warrants being cleared, and over $203,000 in child support collected. Sheriff Arpaio has conducted the round-ups annually since 2002.
