Troubled Tucson schools see more enrollment drops

TUCSON, Ariz. -- A new survey shows that the troubled Tucson Unified School District is continuing to experience drastic enrollment declines.

The Arizona Daily Star reports that the survey found that more than 500 students opted not to enroll just months after the district closed 11 schools.

In recent years, enrollment has been dropping by about 1,500 students annually.

Officials said the expansion of two local charter schools also helped lure students away.

New superintendent H.T. Sanchez has ordered a comprehensive demographics study to understand where people are moving and why, the job opportunities available, and other factors.

The district faced national criticism and was the subject of a PBS documentary after it recently ended its Mexican American Studies program.
