FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. -- A 13-year-old Phoenix-area boy is being treated for serious injuries after falling about 25 feet from a canyon north of Payson.

Coconino County Sheriff's officials say the teenager and his father were bear hunting Saturday in Chevelon Canyon near Forest Lakes when the boy apparently lost his footing.

Because of the steep terrain and rough weather, Arizona Department of Public Safety helicopters in Flagstaff and Phoenix were called in to help rescue the teen.

A paramedic was flown to the bottom of the canyon and hiked up to the boy who suffered injuries on his head, face and legs.

The boy was lifted out of the canyon in a medical basket and flown to a Phoenix hospital in serious condition.

The name of the teen hasn't been released yet.
