PHOENIX -- It took hours for a 10-mile backup of holiday traffic to clear on southbound Interstate 17 near Black Canyon City north of Phoenix late Monday.

The Arizona Department of Transportation said a high volume of traffic caused delays from late afternoon into the evening.

The department first reported the backup around 4 p.m. and advised the news media at about 9 p.m. that it had cleared up.

There also was slowing for two miles on I-17 southbound further north near the Junction with State Route 69.

I-17 is the main route between the Phoenix area and the higher-elevation communities of Prescott, Sedona and Flagstaff.
