PHOENIX -- A ranch owner in Morristown is in custody for alleged animal abuse.

Maricopa County Sheriff's officials say horses on the property of 38-year-old Jesus Torres lacked food and medical attention.

The sheriff's Animal Crimes Unit has seized 10 horses, three goats and four dogs from Torres' ranch.

The ranch is located between the cities of Surprise and Wickenburg in the western part of the county.

The investigation started when sheriff's officials received a complaint this week.

They say Torres is being held on 27 counts of animal abuse.

It was unclear Tuesday if Torres has an attorney yet.
