TUCSON, Ariz. -- The University of Arizona has almost 9,600 new undergraduate students on campus for the fall semester, including nearly 7,200 freshmen.
That's about 200 fewer freshmen than last fall.
School officials said that of freshmen on the first day of classes Monday, more than 4,300 are Arizona residents and nearly 1,800 are transfer students.
In addition, more than 600 former students have re-enrolled to obtain their degrees. Early indicators suggest first-to-second year retention is on the rise for the second consecutive year at the Tucson school.
The UofA has also seen increases in student enrollment from 17 states -- especially California, Colorado, Nevada, Washington and Georgia.
