A man has died of unknown causes in a downtown Mesa Police holding facility, and an investigation is underway.
“We don’t really have any answers as to why he passed away,” said Mesa Police Detective Steve Berry.
The 51-year-old man, whose name has not been released pending notification of the family, was found shortly before 2:30 a.m. by a detention officer. The man was nonresponsive.
“It was noticed that this gentleman was not breathing,” said Berry. “They of course tried to render medical aid.”
Mesa Fire was called but was unable to revive him.
The transient man had been brought in on an arrest warrant. Police said he was intoxicated when they arrested him.
No other details were immediately available.
