PHOENIX -- Phoenix police said a convenience store clerk was shot and wounded by a man who returned to rob the store a second time.

Police said the man first stole beer and food from the store in west-central Phoenix on Saturday evening and then returned with a gun an hour later, demanding cigarettes and money.

Police said that's when he shot the clerk in a leg.

According to police, the robber damaged his vehicle, a Chevrolet Impala, when he backed into concrete pillars after leaving the store.

The clerk was hospitalized in stable condition.
