Tucson playground opens months after being burned
TUCSON, Ariz. -- After months of being off-limits, the playground at Tucson's Vista del Prado Park is open.
Workers with the city's parks and recreation department finished work on the playground earlier this week.
Someone had set fire to the slide at the playground in late February 2012. The following weekend, the rest of the playground was burned.
There was such extensive damage that the department was forced to close the entire playground. It has remained closed until the replacement of the equipment was completed on Tuesday.
City officials said vandalism to park property is a consistent and troubling problem that costs money and wastes resources. They said crews are cleaning up graffiti every day at city parks, and copper thefts along the baseball fields have resulted in Little League games being canceled.
