TEMPE, Ariz. -- With the start of the school year, Tempe police have teamed up with Arizona State University to prevent alcohol-related crimes and violence.

Operation Safe and Sober started Thursday and will run through the end of the month.

As part of the program, uniformed police officers from multiple agencies will increase patrols, DUI enforcement and liquor law inspections for licensed establishments.

Tempe Police Chief Tom Ryff says the city recognizes the negative effects and safety concerns associated with youth alcohol use and loud and unruly parties.

Ryff pointed to changes in the city code approved by councilors to hold party hosts more accountable for illegal activity occurring at their residences.

Law enforcement officials say the operation is also expected to boost traffic and pedestrian safety as students return to school.
