PEORIA, Ariz. -- Members of the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office dive team have recovered the body of a teenager from Lake Pleasant.

Sheriff's spokesman Chris Hegstrom said the 17 year old was swimming with his friends in the Desert Tortoise Cove on Friday. One of the friends told deputies that the teen tensed up, his head jerked downward and he went below the surface of the water.

The friends searched for him but were unsuccessful. They returned to their campsite, and the teen's mother called 911.

Hegstrom said the mother indicated her son was diagnosed with epilepsy and was taking medication daily. She said he suffered a few seizures per year, but that he was a good swimmer.

The dive team recovered the teen's body early Saturday. The body is being sent to the medical examiner's office.
