PHOENIX -- A Guadalupe man is accused of felony animal cruelty after a dead dog was found in a cardboard box.

Maricopa County Sheriff's officials say 59-year-old Ricardo Ramirez Cupis was arrested on Friday.

They say the dog had been placed inside the box and left near a block wall of a home in Guadalupe.

The cardboard box reportedly was tied shut to prevent the dog from escaping.

A witness says he knows Cupis and allegedly saw him carrying the box.

A sheriff's deputy interviewed Cupis, who allegedly admitted placing the live dog inside the box and placing it near the block wall.

Cupis reportedly told authorities that the dog was very sick and he didn't want it to die at his house.

Sheriff's officials don't know if Cupis has a lawyer.
