MESA, Ariz. — Authorities have released the name of wanted man in a wheelchair who was fatally shot by a Mesa police officer.

Police say the man has been identified as 49-year-old Chris Allan Chipman.

They say Chipman had a history of theft and drug-related offenses.

Police say three officers were questioning Chipman on Sunday after they stopped him and confirmed that a felony drug warrant was active.

Police say Chipman was fidgeting with his waistband where officers found two concealed knives during a search.

According to police, Chipman then grabbed a concealed handgun from his side and a struggled ensued between the man and one of the officers.

One of the police officers then fatally shot Chipman and he was pronounced dead at the scene. None of the officers were injured.
