AVONDALE, Ariz. -- The police chief in Avondale is retiring after nearly a decade with the department.

City officials announced the retirement of Kevin Kotsur on Monday.

Assistant Chief Dale Nannenga has been appointed acting chief of the West Valley city.

Nannenga is a 33-year veteran of law enforcement who has been with the department for almost 10 years.

During Kotsur's tenure, the department almost doubled to 171 employees, opened two substations and formed a community action team, which is credited with reducing crime in the city.
