NOGALES -- A Nogales man with "trusted traveler" status for frequent border crossers has been arrested for allegedly trying to smuggle a Mexican woman into Arizona.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers at the Port of Nogales arrested and revoked the Secure Electronic Network for Traveler's Rapid Inspection membership of 27-year-old Juan Carlos Chavez.

Officers say they found a 34-year-old Mexican woman in the trunk of the sedan Chavez was driving Wednesday.

Chavez had initially been referred for a secondary inspection after being unable to open the trunk.

CBO officers say the trunk didn't have an internal release and the woman had to be removed by lowering the back seat.

They say the vehicle was seized and the unidentified woman was being held as a material witness in the case against Chavez.
