PHOENIX -- State Rep. Justin Pierce may run for the Republican nomination for secretary of state.

The Mesa Republican and attorney in private practice has filed papers creating an exploratory committee for the 2014 election.

Pierce became a legislator in 2011 when he was appointed to fill a midterm vacancy, and he was elected to a term of his own in November.

The secretary of state's duties include overseeing Arizona's election system. The secretary becomes governor if there's a midterm vacancy as Arizona does not have a lieutenant governor.

Current Secretary of State Ken Bennett is barred by term limits from running for re-election.

At least two other current legislators, Rep. Steve Montenegro and Sen. Michele Reagan, also are exploring possible candidacies for the Republican nomination for secretary of state.
