Grand Canyon National Park officials monitor 3 small fires

GRAND CANYON NATIONAL PARK, Ariz. -- Grand Canyon National Park officials said they're monitoring three small lightning-caused fires on the canyon's north rim.

For now, park officials said they are not aggressively trying to put them out.

Two of the fires started Sunday and the third on Monday. The largest as of Thursday is a half-acre burning in forest about two miles from the north rim's entrance station.

Park officials said they're allowing the fires to burn after taking into consider the locations, the fuel being burned and the objective of allowing fire in ecosystems where fire naturally occurs.

The canyon's north rim is receiving seasonal rains so park officials expect the fires to remain small.

The fires haven't resulted in any trail or road closures.
