PHOENIX -- A Phoenix police officer shot a robbery suspect in the face after he tried to reach for the officer's gun.
It started early Saturday when three people allegedly stole alcohol, cigarettes and doughnuts from a convenience store and then drove away in a minivan. They headed down an alley before driving through a fence and then fleeing on foot.
As the suspects hid, police Sgt. Steve Martos told KNXV-TV that one of them tried to reach for an officer's gun and the officer fired.
Martos said the suspect is in critical condition at a local hospital.
Officers also used a police dog to take into custody one of the other suspects who was hiding.
No other details were released.
